Now that you have braces, it’s important to know how to take care of them throughout your treatment to ensure the best results. Proper maintenance will keep your teeth and appliances in great condition, helping you get that beautiful smile in less time.
Eating with Braces
While you’ll eventually be able to enjoy treats like popcorn and potato chips again, there are some foods you’ll need to avoid during your treatment to prevent damage to your braces. Be mindful of what you eat to avoid any issues with your appliances.
Dealing with Soreness
It’s normal to feel some tenderness or discomfort when you first get your braces, Invisalign attachments, or other orthodontic appliances. This should subside within a few days. If the soreness persists, try taking a pain reliever to ease the discomfort.
Handling Broken Brackets or Wires
Occasionally, the brackets on your braces or Invisalign attachments can break. If you experience any issues, call our office for an appointment. In the meantime, you can gently reposition a loose wire with the back of a spoon or the eraser of a pencil. If the wire is causing irritation, cover it with wax or a wet cotton ball to relieve pain.
Taking Care of Your Appliances
Damaged appliances can lengthen your treatment time, so it’s essential to take good care of them. Consistently wearing prescribed rubber bands, headgear, retainers, or other appliances as directed by your orthodontist will help your teeth and jaw move into their correct positions.
Playing Sports with Braces
Good news for athletes! You can still participate in sports during your orthodontic treatment, but we recommend wearing a mouthguard to protect both your teeth and braces. If you need help choosing the right mouthguard, just ask us. If you experience an injury, check your teeth and appliances for damage right away. Apply wax or rinse with warm saltwater to relieve discomfort, and contact our office for further assistance.

Brushing and Flossing with Braces
Brushing and flossing are critical when you have braces. To keep your teeth and gums healthy, brush for two minutes, twice a day, and floss after every meal. If you need guidance on the right toothbrush, toothpaste, or floss, we’re happy to help you choose the best products for your braces.

Brushing with Braces
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste to brush your teeth. You can also use a powered toothbrush for better cleaning. Brush the outer and inner surfaces of your teeth in gentle, circular motions, and make sure to focus on the areas around your brackets. Clean the chewing surfaces and the inside surface of your front teeth with short, back-and-forth motions. Remember to brush for two minutes, twice a day!

Flossing with Braces
Flossing is just as important as brushing. Use a floss threader or special orthodontic floss to navigate between the wires and your teeth. Gently slide the floss back and forth to remove food particles and plaque. Don’t forget to floss beneath the gum line to ensure your braces and teeth stay clean. If you’re having trouble flossing, consider asking us about water flossers for a more efficient clean.
By following these tips and maintaining your appliances with care, you’re on your way to a healthier, straighter smile! If you have any questions or need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
